Gas prices are on the rise again, meaning that it’s time to be smart with your gas consumption. Before we know it we’ll be back to those days in 2008 when gas prices were $1.38/litre. *shudders*. As it is an inevitability, your friends at Prime thought we’d offer our trade secrets to save you some money at the pump!
Drive Consistently.
In most cases the number one tip you hear is to drive slowly. While driving slowly does help, there are some instances where that’s not the best course of action. For example, if you’re a speed demon, odds are you’ll instinctively want to go faster than you’re trying to. In this case, you’ll end up speeding up and slowing down more often, which will cause you to use more gas. The best method is to drive a consistent speed. Stop and start gently, and you’ll be saving your gas, brakes and transmission!
Pump them up.
Have low pressure in your tires can actually make your fuel economy worse, and means your tires will wear differently. Check your tire pressure every few weeks to ensure it’s at the proper level.
Check your air filter.
Having a clean air filter allows air to move through your engine easier, meaning less work for the car overall. While filters don’t need to be changed extremely often, this is something you may want to check every 6 months or so.
Remove the “junk in the trunk”.
If you’re anything like me, stuff tends to build up in the trunk. While I’ve always got the essentials (oil, funnel, blanket, washer fluid, etc.), You probably don’t need those 3 pairs of shoes, ALL of your textbooks (from every semester of university), and 14 spare outfits. Keeping your car light will help your fuel economy.
Follow the trucks
Similar to point #1, stop slowly. You’ll notice that when a transport truck is stuck in a traffic jam he’s all about coasting, which is not only easier on his transmission, but it’s better for his fuel economy! By coasting and breaking longer and softer you can prolong the life of your car!
Let in the air.
While some people don’t know it, using your air conditioning can lower your fuel economy. Instead, opt to roll down your windows. This will allow you to get some fresh air, and will also save your gas!
Fill up efficiently.
I actually tested this theory myself a few months ago. Filling up when you need gas (instead of putting in a specific dollar amount) will save you money AND time at the pump!
Keep it clean.
Keeping your car clean will allow it to be more aerodynamic. Think about it – which would be smoother for air to move around, the nicely waxed car or the one covered it mud and dirt?
Downsize
If you’re looking at getting a new car, consider your needs. While you may have needed to cart your 4 kids around in a minivan 5-10 years ago, haven’t they gone off to college? Maybe a sedan or crossover would suit your needs just as well!
Drive when necessary
I’m definitely guilty for this, but try driving only when you have to. Although the car is often more convenient, consider what you’re spending, and also what you’re losing! I’ll bet Rover would enjoy a walk to the corner store much more than a 30 second car ride!
