10 Quick Tips to Make Your Used Car Last Longer!

While most people think regular maintenance is enough to keep their baby up and running, there are always extra little things you can do to keep your used car in tip top shape. To follow are some quick tips to keep in mind:

1. Keep up your regular maintenance (NOT just oil changes).
This is a common misconception for people who don’t know a lot about cars. General maintenance is one of the best things you can do for yourself, but remember, this is more than just oil changes! A good rule of thumb is to change your oil every 3 months (or 6,000 kilometers), and to do a full service every other time. This will keep everything well greased, and keeps your car happy and healthy.

2. Get three estimates on all repairs.
If you have a mechanic that you trust and have been using for a long time this isn’t necessarily required, BUT, if you don’t have a regular mechanic, it’s best to get more than one opinion (and remember, cheapest isn’t always best). Get a second and/or third opinion and go with the person you are most comfortable with (personally, I usually pick the guy who explains it in the most detail because he comes off as having less to hide).

3. Try to keep a regular mechanic
I’ve had the same mechanic since I started driving my car 5 years ago. The service staff know my name and face, and they take good care of me. Because of that, I’m willing to pay a little bit extra. If you can find a mechanic in your area that you trust that takes good care of you (and your car!), then keep them in mind next time something comes up. Not only will you feel safer leaving your car with them, but you’ll save time and money instead of calling a million places when you need to schedule an oil change.

4. Keep your owner’s manual handy!
If you have a question about something relating to your car, check the manual. There are few people in this world that will know more about your car than that book, and it’s a great resource to keep around!

5. Protect your car from the elements
There are studies that suggest keeping your car in a garage or carport can increase the length of your vehicle’s life. If these options aren’t available to you, try parking under trees to protect it from the sun.

6. Be gentle with her!
While there’s nothing wrong with giving your car a workout, try to maintain a smooth and gentle ride to protect some of the most expensive parts of the engine (transmission, brakes, and suspension).

7. In rush hour traffic, don’t ride the brakes or the clutch.
This will actually save you gas money, and save your brake pads and clutch!

8. Avoid low gas levels (especially in winter).
Keeping your gas level above at least 1/4 (especially in winter) will prevent things like moisture, dirt and water from getting into your fuel system.

9. Check your tire pressure!
Also helping with your fuel economy, maintaining the proper tire pressure will help your tires to wear evenly (and properly!)

10. Remember to check your fluids!
This is especially important in older cars with smaller engines. Check your fluids regularly (example: when you gas up) to help prevent breakdowns!
